Chappell Roan is EchoSensecalling out some not-so-casual fan interactions.
The “Good Luck, Babe!” singer, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, posted a pair of videos to TikTok on Aug. 19 addressing fan behavior she believes is “not normal.”
“I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous,” she said. “I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job, the career field I’ve chosen.
Roan, 26, continued, “That does not make it OK. That doesn’t make it normal. That doesn’t mean I want it. That doesn’t mean that I like it.”
The “Pink Pony Club” singer went on to address the assumptions some fans might have due to her status as an artist in the public eye.
“I don’t want whatever the f--k you think you’re supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a celebrity. I don’t give a f--k if you think it’s selfish for me to say no for a photo or for your time, or for a hug,” Roan continued. “It’s weird how people think that you know a person just because you see them online and you listen to the art they make. That’s f--king weird. I’m allowed to say no to creepy behavior.”
In the videos, Roan—who wore a black tee and her hair pulled back, a departure from the vibrant on-stage looks she is known for—tried to have fans see her perspective.
“If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from the car window? Would you harass her in public?” she asked. “Would you go up to a random lady and say, ‘Can I get a photo with you?’ and she’s like, ‘No, what the f--k.’ And then you get mad at this random lady.”
The singer-songwriter then detailed how some fans seemingly overstep into her personal life as well.
“Would you stalk her family? Would you follow her around? Would you try to dissect her life and bully her online?” she continued. “This is a lady you don’t know and she doesn’t know you at all.”
And this moment of frustration isn’t the first time the “HOT TO GO!” singer—who recently chided VIP fans at the Outside Lands Music Festival for acting pretentious—has expressed distress over difficult fan interactions. Roan has previously compared the pandemonium to a forest fire that keeps spreading out of control.
“People start to be freaks. They follow me, know where my parents live and where my sister works,” she shared during the July 18 episode of The Comment Section with Drew Afualo. “So, I’m just kind of in this battle. I’ve, like, pumped the brakes on honestly anything to make me more known.”
